McDonald's Philippines

McDonald's is one of the most popular fastfood restaurants which many Filipinos patronize. Its name is commonly shortened to "Mcdo" by Filipinos. Its strong competitor is Jollibee Foods Corporation, which is owned by a Chinese-born Filipino entrepreneur.

Since the currency in the Philippines is lower than in developed countries and labor is very cheap, McDonald's has managed to lower the prices of food in its menu to meet the budget of the common Filipino.

Prices of food as compared to the United States

Big Mac burger
Let's start comparing prices of burgers first, as they are the one of the most sold products by McDonald's. The exchange rate as of July 30, 2015 is ₱45.48 for every $1.

In the Philippines, a Big Mac is sold at ₱133 ($2.92). The average price of the same Big Mac in the United States is $4.79 (₱217.84) based on 2015 index. That's almost 39% savings in the Philippines. McDonald's products in the Philippines has little difference in the quality as with United States and other countries because raw products are also imported from countries with accredited producers of McDonald's. One thing that makes products in the Philippines cheaper is the low price of labor and operating costs.

The cheapest burger sold by McDonald's in the Philippines, the Burger Mcdo (which is not sold in most McDonald's in most other countries), is simply a regular-sized burger patty sandwiched by 2 slices of bread. It is priced at ₱28 ($0.62). It is commonly bought by the average Filipino either as a quick meal for themselves or as a treat for their friends and family at home.

McDonald's Fries
On the other hand, a McDonald's Fries is sold at the following prices in the Philippines:
  • Regular = ₱30 or $0.66
  • Medium = ₱50 or $1.10
  • Large = ₱61 or $1.34
In the United States, McDonald's Fries is sold at the following average prices (depending on the state):
  • Regular = $1.29 or ₱58.67
  • Medium = $1.59 or ₱72.31
  • Large = $1.79 or ₱81.41
As the data above shows, buying a McDonald's Fries in the Philippines will save you 49% for small, 31% for medium, and 25% for large than in United States. Again, it is the difference in the price of labor and operating costs which determine the price of the product, but since the Philippines is rich in agriculture, the price of potatoes in the country is less, lowering the price of potato-based products.
If we were to compare all McDonald's products here and in the United States, this article would be very long.
