Ways of accessing the Internet

There are all those electronic devices that can be used to access the Internet in the country - either from a desktop computer, laptop, mobile phone (and even gaming consoles - really possible, but not practical).

Internet cafes

Internet cafes are the most common places where anyone can access the Internet at decent speeds (and play games when they want to) and lowest costs. They are locally named in the Philippines as "computer shops". They have become one of the most profitable small businesses in the country, though they require a large capital to start.

A typical Internet cafe will charge a rent of between ₱10 to ₱20 per hour ($0.22 to $0.44, using the conversion rate as of June 14, 2015). However, watch out for those which are crowded and dark, as they will not provide you with a comfortable and safe stay. These shops will usually charge you a minimum of 15 minutes to 30 minute denominations to make up for their low rental charges.

On the other hand, Internet cafes which are branches of popular companies boast their much faster computer and Internet speeds, clean and spacious areas which are not the qualities of typical Internet cafes. Unless you have a membership card or coupons for the respective Internet cafe, you will be charged rates between $0.56 to $0.90 per hour. However, if you just wanted to have a 10-minute Internet access, these branded shops will usually charge you on a per-minute basis, so for that 10-minute access, you will be charged only about $0.20.

Laptop

A person that has a laptop can access the Internet anywhere by either staying in a WiFi-enabled spot or by bringing a broadband stick. Connecting to WiFi in a public place is free provided that the user complies to the requirements of the WiFi provider. Broadband sticks are usually tied in to major networks that require you to pay in terms before you can access the Internet using various connection methods.

Mobile phones

Mobile phones really count as the most "mobile" method of quickly accessing the Internet. Most mobile phones today support Internet browsing (for a small fee like $1.25 for unlimited 24 hours Internet access), and like laptops, some of them can even connect to the Internet through WiFi providers. Watch out for the battery consumption though - accessing the Internet from a mobile phone is more battery-consuming than having a voice call.
