Introduction to living in the country for foreigners

This is intended for foreigners who have visited Philippines cities and have a set budget for it, but everyone is welcome to learn here. Links have been provided to lead you to the more appropriate and specific article for each topic.

Getting cash

The best way to access money around the world is to have an international debit or credit card. That way, you can obtain cash through ATMs (Automated Teller Machines) in the Philippines (in which there are small fees, often about $3 per withdrawal), or pay merchants directly through designated electronic terminals (which usually do not have additional fees charged to you).

If you have cash in hand that is not in the Philippine local currency, you can check out how to exchange your foreign money.

Lodging

Finding a place to sleep for the night (or for the day) is a must for a foreigner who has not yet found a temporary or permanent place to stay in the country.

Dining

Depending on the length of your stay and your budget, there are different good choices about where to take each of your meals. You do not need to worry about the crew not speaking English.
  • In restaurants, a full and satisfying meal will usually cost between $5 to $10. You can expect great service, as each crew member is trained to serve the customers with satisfaction.
  • In branded fast food chains, you can expect food to be delivered to you fast - usually less than a minute from the time that a crew member takes your order. An average order will cost between $2 to $5. Healthy meals are generally available in these places, so you would not have to worry about eating foods that are not rich in nutrients.

Internet access

Once in a while, you may want to check your online accounts such as your mail. There are many ways to access the Internet in the Philippines.
